Heart Words....a.k.a. Sight Words

Instead of calling  sight words by this name, I call them Heart Words in my classroom because they kids have to learn these words by heart. Sight words are not "rule followers" and  must be memorized. I usually begin sight words the second week of school and introduce 2-4 words per week.  In the beginning, I make one of the sight words a color word each week. Then, I move on to adding the numbers words for 1-10 (again, adding one of these to my Heart Words each week).  Below is a link to my Heart Word unit that you can find on TPT.

Fall Math Stations

Today, my kindergarten students began a new rotation of math stations - focusing on fall and Halloween.  The first station is called Candy Corn Measuring.  The students work with a partner to determine how many candy corn (large cutouts) pieces tall they are.  Then, they record it on a recording sheet and use the mini-candy corn cutouts to clue next to a their drawing of themself.

At another station called "Spooky Spin and Graph" (from TPT's Kathleen Pederson "It's Fall Y'all"), the students spin the spinner, then they make a graph to record their spin each time.  After spinning a predetermined number of times, they complete an analyzing data sheet.

In "Spider Sums"  (TPT's Kathleen Pederson's "It's Fall Y'all), the students roll two dice.  They place that number of bats from the first die on the first spider web and repeat with the second die. (Spiders would have been better to use, but I didn't have any!) Then, on the recording sheet, they write down the numbers in the blanks and add the two numbers together to get the sum.......

Great Fall Fun!!!!

Fall Classroom Decorating Ideas

OK!  This is my very first attempt at blogging....I love all the other ideas I find, so thought I would give it a try, too...  Hope you find an idea you like!

I found this cute door decorating idea on Pinterest.  My kiddos love entering the classroom under this big, floppy scarecrow hat!

Last week my students made scarecrows following a glyph pattern.  This is the pattern they followed...
